Lord, Have Mercy
I keep thinking about the woman that Jesus met when he was on vacation (Matthew 15:21). Yes, Jesus took vacations too. As he was in another country, a woman began following him, shouting “Lord, have mercy!” It kept on so long that the disciples asked Jesus to chase her away as if she were some stray dog. Though he refused to chase her away, he also didn’t respond to her. So she came and knelt at his feet and pleaded with him, “Lord, have mercy.”
Her prayer has become the prayer of the church. When in worship, we say or sing the ‘Kyrie’- “Lord have mercy.” In times of need when we don’t know what to pray, we can say “Lord have mercy.” When you hear the siren of an emergency vehicle, and don’t know where it’s going or who is needing help, you can say, “Lord, have mercy.” There are times it seems God is not listening, but as we keep praying, we realize that he does hear us and will act.
Black Forest Festival
We have big plans for the Black Forest Festival on Saturday, August 12. There will be face painting, balloon twisting and magic in the BFLC parking lot. We want to introduce families with children to our congregation. Come enjoy the festival and parade and say hi to people who stop by our church property.
Sedra is wanting to visit our youth and parents in their homes. Nothing can replace connecting with people in their most comfortable surroundings. When Sedra calls, please find a time that works for him to visit with you in your home.
KidZone - Black Forest Festival
Black Forest Lutheran Church will be hosting a KidZone booth during the 2017 Black Forest Festival on Saturday, August 12 from 9:00 AM 1:00 PM. Our intent is to show God’s love and goodness by welcoming young families to BFLC property, particularly those that may be new to the community. To continue the conversation with this young family community Sedra and the Youth Committee will host a “Date Night Out” on the 3rd Friday of September that will provide free childcare for kids from preschool through middle school. This will give parents a small break for a much-needed date night. BFLC will also provide free parking for the Festival in the front and back lots. We will also provide water and lemonade and access to bathroom facilities.
About the Kid Zone Booth: The booth will be in the back lot of BFLC near the Shoup Rd entrance. We will have 2 - 10x10 canopies and 3-4 tables for Face Painting, Balloon making, bubbles and coloring. We will have Christian music playing as well. Needed support: Sign makers, youth greeters, youth to hold signs near Black Forest Rd and Shoup Rd, BFLC families to “network” with our guests and to hand out flyers for the Date Night Out.
Contact Patsy Wurster if you are able to help with the Festival.
The Social Ministry Committee will host its annual Lemonade and Gingersnap Sunday following outdoor worship on Aug. 13. This fundraiser enhances the yearly financial gifts BFLC gives to our Mission Partner - Cristo Rey in El Paso, TX . The gingersnaps are homemade and melt in your mouth! The lemonade is icy cold. Following ginger snaps & lemonade on August 13, everyone is invited to Fellowship Hall for a baby shower for Hephzibah Jewel Razainimanana Sedra and Kathryn are registered at Target.
If you have questions, please ask Kathy Schwindt
Mark your calendars for the Annual BFLC Picnic - August 27th after the service. This year bring your favorite chili. There will be prizes for “best chili” and “most unique chili”. Get your recipes and crock pots ready and be on the look out for the sign up sheet. If making chili isn't your thing, bring your appetite and be ready to vote for your favorite. Sides, drinks, and desserts will be provided. Brought to you by your Congregational Life Committee

Adopt a Plot on the Church Grounds
Perhaps you have noticed landscaping improvements on the church grounds. God has given BFLC a beautiful piece of property to build His place of worship. Thank you to those who are helping us to maintain it; however, there is more work to be done. We would like to propose an opportunity for our families to help with the care our property needs - Adopt a Plot. For example - weeds need to be pulled; pine cones picked up; the volley ball court and play ground areas, the path to the pole barn, etc. etc. could use some sprucing up. Two church clean-up days a year does not keep our property at its optimal. If you would be interested in adopting a plot, let Jeanette Gould or Mary Montie know and we can work out the details. Many hands make for light work!

Volunteer Opening Available!
The Social Ministry Committee is seeking a volunteer to join our committee as we work to be the hands and feet of Christ to those outside our congregation. The committee normally meets twice per year, but stays active throughout the year coordinating and planning special events and charity drives. If you feel you are called to this type of work, please contact either Jeanette Gould in the office or Dave Reily, the chairperson of the committee.
My heart is overflowing with gratitude to you all for reflecting God’s light to me, and family members, in so many ways during some dark and difficult days in the aftermath of Bob’s death and most recently since the Easter death of my granddaughter, Shannon. I am jolted out of self as I witness the grief at work in her two children, and in her parents. I think of the many others in our congregation also experiencing heart break and loss in diverse private situations. I just want you to know that I feel your generous discipling goodness and am so thankful for you all. Love in the light of Christ,
Birthday Party Results
The Social Ministry Committee thanks you all for contributing to our annual birthday party fundraiser for Fisher House. The day was splendid, as was the cake! BFLC has a unique way of celebrating our nation’s and individuals birthdays - outdoor worship in a beautiful setting, followed by sharing cake and contributing toward a gift of $579 to a great ministry, which serves our military. Thank you!
Dear BFLC Service Projects Committee and Volunteer Mission Group from Texas. Thank you for your exceptional work in mitigating our property. May the Lord bless all of you.

The Ronald McDonald House
Dear BFLC Family,
Peace be with you. In the upcoming Fall 2017, we want to start a mentorship/sponsorship program for our confirmation class. Some of the goals are to build community, encourage cross generational relationship, share experiences (to pair up the wisdom of the elder with the wonder of the youth), discuss the topics we cover during class to deepen the youth’s understanding while giving the mentors the opportunity to share their faith and experience, coaching and mentoring through issues that the youth want to deal with. Our expectation is for the sponsor and the youth to meet at least once a month. Confirmation class goes for 2 years. Confirmation will start in September. We will have an orientation and workshop before we jump into this program. Would you please pray and consider being a mentor for the youth? The confirmation class of 2018 and 2019 will be the pioneers of this program. Would you please share your ideas on how we can be successful in this program? The big picture is “as we are going we are to make disciples”. We can start this within our congregation. How wonderful would it be to have the youth and the older generations in our congregation to have vibrant discipleship relationships?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Peace and Blessing, Sedra RAZ Youth and Education Director, BFLC 719-495-2221
