Stewardship
We all have a purpose. We are partners with God in His redeeming work in this world. He has entrusted us with gifts so that we can influence others for good. In October and November, we’ll focus on ways we impact others through the use (or Stewardship) of God’s gifts. How might you make a difference through your time, talent, treasure, or testimony? New Member Sunday - October 14 Welcome our New Members at the reception at 9:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Remember to wear your name tags. Confirmation Sunday - October 21 Five students will affirm their faith at the 10:30 AM service. They are:
Reformation Sunday - October 28 It’s been 501 years since Martin Luther nailed the 95 Thesis to the Wittenberg Church door. How is God reforming the church today? How is he reshaping and redirecting you? Remember to wear red on October 28. The Grove is a time every 1st and 3rd Sunday evening from 5:00 - 6:00 PM, to share in each other’s lives and embrace the community with which God has blessed us. We come together at 5:00 PM for 20-25 minutes of prayer, music, and a brief devotional. But don’t be fooled. This time is crafted for folks who are 9 months, 9 years, or 99 years old. We love noisy babies, restless toddlers, angsty teenagers, busy adults and tired retirees. Sit, stand, crawl, dance, the point of this time is to simply be comfortable and enjoy the good company. At about 5:30 we will have a meal. We all love to eat and some of the best experiences of life are over a warm plate. We know life is busy and young ones need their rest so if you’re ready to call it a night after dinner, by all means feel free to head out. If the night still feels young, then by shortly after 6:00 we will often have some rotating fun event or extra gathering for the evening. Talks around a fire pit, parent support groups, flashlight tag in the woods, making charitable crafts for those in need, the time after 6pm may look different each time we meet but will always fill your soul and help further build you into the community. Check out www.TheGroveBFLC.com and sign up to receive emails for updates! Jeremy is looking for VOLUNTEERS! We’re getting ready to kick off some great stuff for the fall, but we need some more volunteers to help with the youth, Sunday school and The Grove. For The Grove, we specifically need volunteers for the music and meal rotations (you’d end up serving about once every two months). Email Jeremy at TheGrove@bflchurch.org or call/text him at 949-231-2029 Influencing Others Thru Stewardship Stewardship will begin sharing through God's influence on us, we have given the gifts and opportunity to influence others through the use of our time, talents, treasure, and testimony. Beginning October 14th, the Stewardship Committee will be offering stories of how some have been challenged, grown their faith, and been a recipient of someone else's kind act. Join us on November 11th as we celebrate the journey of being God's steward. Congregation Information Meeting Everyone is invited to an informal meeting on November 4th after 2nd Service to hear the final report of the Special Study Group. Written reports will be provided in the Narthex prior to the meeting. This report was promised to be provided to the Congregation as a follow up to the 2018 Annual Meeting. If you wish to bring a light snack or a dessert, please feel free to do so. If you have questions, please contact Kathy Schwindt, Dave Reily or Steve Lord. We hope you will take time to be informed how much work has been put into this project and where things will go from here. BFLC Book Group Reads Non-fiction in October We will be reading and discussing The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot Join us at the church for discussion on Wednesday, October, 17 at 1:00 PM Senior Social October 24 at 1:00 PM Join us for our monthly get together to socialize, play dominoes, or do crafts. There is no obligation to participate in the games. Individuals bring their own crafts to work on. Others use the opportunity to just sit and talk. Light snacks are provided. Christmas Cards For Prisoners It is time to gather to write Christmas cards to prisoners through Prayer for Prisoners International on Sunday, November, 11 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall. PFPI is based in Canyon City with outreach to prisons all across the United States. At Christmas they have a massive mission outreach to send personal Christmas cards to any prisoner who requests one. If you can join us, there is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board to indicate how many cards you might bring. We need to have estimate of how many names we will need. The cards you provide must be Christian; no Santa’s or snowmen. This is our opportunity to send the love of Jesus to prisoners and impact their lives this Christmas. Join us on November 11 at 1:00 PM for Christmas music, cookies and lots of card writing. Have you noticed the new sign at the Black Forest Road entrance? The property committee has been investigating sign options for several years and thanks to the efforts of Brian Green, John Poss, and Vern Regennitter, we were able to procure a new one and have it installed last month. These gentlemen put in many hours of investigation as to cost and visibility of a new sign that would remain aesthetically pleasing to the forest environment in which we worship. Great job! Pumpkin Carving and Chili Cook-Off! Come show up your chili cooking skills by bringing your best dish (spicy or otherwise) to the dinner at The Grove on October 21st! Sign up with Jeremy or on the sheet in the Fellowship Hall to note the type of chili you’ll be bringing. Oh, and did I mention that there will be prizes in the areas of Best Overall Taste, Most Creative, and Best Balance of Spice? Then jump into the fall spirit with some family pumpkin carving after The Grove at 6:00 PM! Pumpkins, craft supplies and carving tools will be provided so that folks of all ages can decorate or create a Jack-O- Lantern! Didi Panzo in the Congo Didi and Serafina are both safe and healthy in Boma. They will come to the US late in the year for the marriage of one of their daughters. I sent some more dresses made at BFLC to a daughter so they can take them back. The leader of World Mission Prayer League and a fellow missionary from Kenya came to Boma and spent a week with Didi, visiting the farm, the orphans and where he is leading the seminary in Tshela. The visit was an opportunity for Didi and WMPL to strengthen their communications. The Congo has an election coming up soon. There is a lot of uncertainty in the countryside, with different groups pushing for dominance. It is hard to predict what might happen. Please pray for the safety of the Panzos. There is a Catholic orphanage nearby. They are overwhelmed by the number of children in need, balanced against their meager resources. Didi gave them some dresses made by BFLC for the little girls. Foster Children News! Mark Your Calendars! Stability. Enrichment. Community. Which one should foster children go without? Children enter foster care if they are not safe in their homes because of abuse or neglect – not because what THEY DID but what was DONE to THEM. Did you know that within two years of aging out of the system, only 20% finish high school? Did you know 50% will face homelessness? The odds are against them. The Fostering Hope Foundation exists to support foster families to improve the odds their children won’t become one of those statistics. Would you like to learn how you can help foster families? Not by becoming a foster parent yourself, but by aiding foster families as they work to provide stable environments? Laura Moody, a Fostering Hope Coordinator will be at church between services on two Sundays – Oct 28 and Nov 4 to present a short information session about how you can really make a difference to a foster family. Plan to attend one of her presentations at 9:30am either Sunday. Questions? Contact Laura at laura.moody@fosteringhopefoundation.org (cell is 701-500-1975) or Dave Reily (Social Ministries Committee). 2nd Sunday Support Teenage years can be tough. If you’re a teenager, parent, teacher, grandparent or work with teens then join us Sunday, October 14 at 6:30 PM as we talk about how to live with and manage our anxiety. BFLC Book Group Reads Non-fiction in October We will be reading and discussing The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot Join us at the church for discussion on Wednesday, Oct. 17th at 1:00 PM Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer, yet her cells--taken without her knowledge--became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first "immortal" human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer and viruses; helped lead to in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks is buried in an unmarked grave. Her family did not learn of her "immortality" until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. The story of the Lacks family is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. Copies of the book on loan from the Pikes Peak Library District Book Club Collection and are available in the church office to be signed out. Contact: Nancy Lord Senior Social - October 24 at 1:00 PM Join us for our monthly get together to socialize, play dominoes, or do crafts. There is no obligation to participate in the games. Missionary Didi Panzo in the Congo Didi is in the midst of a visit by World Mission Prayer league people. Paul is the General Director and Gloria is a nurse from Kenya. They also went to the College where Didi is the interim manager and an instructor. Paul has preached and they are getting to see the area. The visit is particularly important because communication is always tough between Boma and the US. Please pray for the safety of the visitors, as well as for Didi and Serafina. These are all huge questions but that doesn’t mean we should be scared to ask them.
